Snorkelling with octopus and climbing my first cave in Sardinia

Following on from the last post where we have finally been scuba diving on the Isola die Cavoli near Villasimius, we found some free parking just down the road from the port and proceeded to spend a couple of nights there. It was a lovely location, although we were always on edge, with the fear... Continue Reading →

Sardinia, Diving at Isola dei Cavoli

Since the beginning of this trip I have looked forward to scuba diving somewhere hot and sunny, with clear waters. It has taken an age but finally we took the plunge and got our first couple of dives in the bag. These dives were at the south east corner of Sardinia, around an island called... Continue Reading →

Venice or Venezia, you choose!

You may wonder why I would start a post about Venice talking about the ticket machines, instead of a majestic intro that sets up the rest of the post about how beautiful the city is. However, these bloody machines, they are so loud! The first thing you press is the large British flag, the machine... Continue Reading →

Lake Como

After the minor disaster that was the south coast of France, we were keen to move on and turn a new leaf, so we headed into Italia! We knew the Dolies was the next big destination, but the 7 plus hours driving were a little off putting, so we decided on a slight detour to... Continue Reading →

Pyramid du Tacul, East Ridge (AD 5a)

It must appear to some that each of these climbs/posts are starting to roll into one another, however this could not be further from the truth. Each of these experiences is unique to one another. Sure, there are similarities, but each adventure has its own personalities, its own take on a similar story, and todays... Continue Reading →

Secret Aims of Valley Cragging

We have been based in Chamonix for the best part of a month and have so far had some great adventures in the mountains. That said, there have often been down days where rest is required and there have been as many, if not more, bad weather days where restlessness is acquired. The past few... Continue Reading →

Aiguille Grands Montets, East Ridge

We have had a barren spell of getting into the mountains recently, mostly due to the weather. That’s not to say we have not missed a couple of average days, when getting up at 6am, looking through the curtains and seeing nothing but cloud or rain, and on those days my bed is more inviting.... First Alpine Trip Diary – Arolla

The weather here has been a bit poor recently and has kept us rooted to the valley floor, with rain, wind and cloud. However all this bad weather has enabled me to write a few more blog posts about climbing in the valley that I will publish later. That said, the days of sitting in the... Continue Reading →

Madagasikara, TD- 6a

Sometimes a post does not need a title, as the name of the climb is so cool! That’s the first thing that drew me to this climb, the second was its vicinity to the Index chair lift, only 20 minutes to walk in, and thirdly was the 6a pitch, as I’m hoping to climb bolts... Continue Reading →

A Request from a Follower!

As the title says, I have had a request from a follower via email to share more about who I am, how I got here and where I am going. All these things that have not been fully covered in the blog as of yet, and were totally overlooked by me! I hope they don't... Continue Reading →

Index, Southeast Ridge- AD, 4c

Just a short one as it was a short day! After such a long day spent on the Aiguille Purtscheller, me and Jess fancied an easier day with less approach and lower graded climbing, but still keeping to traditional climbing, so the South East Ridge on the index was an ideal choice. It has a... Continue Reading →

Running Down the Down Days

So on here I have posted much about the days when there is lots going on, I have talked about life in the van a little and although there are adventures taking place pretty regularly out here, there are also days where the sun does not shine and life is put on hold, such as... Continue Reading →

Cham they’re off!

After a few weeks in the burgundy region of France, we made the snap decision for a change of scenery and hit the road, bound for Chamonix. Once we arrived, we had a day off to rest, and managed to sort out some admin in the van and around town. By the end of the... Continue Reading →

Au Revoir Burgundy!

What can I say, Burgundy has delivered, time and again I have been able to reflect on life in a present context. I'm happy to be here, and have enjoyed the entire stay! Whilst driving along I have managed to catch some fragmentary impressions, which have given me glimpses of wonderful things; chateaus and rolling... Continue Reading →

It’s a dog’s life!

Bored, bored , bored… Oh my, what’s that I hear? I stretch my neck and feel my ears go up on end, yeah, I can definitely hear something approaching. Oh look here it is, it’s big, and blue, oh I like it already, let’s run around in circles… Oh crap, big mistake, I’m too hot... Continue Reading →

Climbing in Sausages!

We arrived in Saucisson, or whatever it’s called (actually Le Saussois), just as the evening was creeping in, a little neglected village set in serene surroundings welcomed us. We parked the van in front of a foreboding looking rock face, which I later found out was full of some of the great test pieces of... Continue Reading →

Grasping at Grass!

Have you ever woken up, strolled outside the bedroom, and someone has set up a market outside? No? Me neither, well until this morning that is. Literally popped my head out of the van and there are parked cars and stalls everywhere, as you might imagine we got the wheels moving pretty quickly once I... Continue Reading →

Run Forest, Run!

After a day of Wi-Fi and Plug hogging in McDonald's, it was time to get back into the wild. Although not too far into it, as we needed the Internet again tomorrow for Jess's work! So we drove a couple of miles out of Avallon towards Pontaubert and turned off onto the Route de Cousin... Continue Reading →

There’s More to Dijon than Mustard!

So after a trip into Fontainbleau, we set out for the Retour de Sources climbing festival at Grand Paraquet. There was a full competition boulder wall set up, and although the weather had changed for the worse we decided to stick around and wait for the worse to pass. Once it did the competitors got... Sleepless in Fontainebleau!

Quite bloody literally, I drove through the night after getting off the ferry. We decided against using the toll roads and taking the extra hour on the journey to save some money. So we arrived in Font at around 7am with zero sleep. We went to bed for a few hours but in the end... Continue Reading →

Southeast Ridge (AD 4c), Aiguille L’Index, Aiguille Rouges

After a hard months climbing in and around the Chamonix area, we were beginning to run out of steam, there was some still left in the tank, so we chose to have a crack at some routes in the Aiguille Rouges. The entire trip we had not used lifts as we were on a massive budget, so going up the Index lift was a luxury and my feet were happy for the relief of not having to hike to the base of the climbs.

Aiguille du Tour, Haute-Savoie

This climb was completed in the summer of 2015, during a somewhat turbulent trip to the Alps, we had been somewhat unlucky with the weather and also with other climbs that were left without topping out. All this had led to tensions within the group, and when a weather window showed its head we jumped at... Continue Reading →

Winspit, Swanage

Had a great day climbing, although somewhat tired from yesterdays diving. We managed to get a few routes in, and as it’s been a while since I last went there it was good to be back. After warming up on anne-marie paid my fee (awesome name!) and another 4c climb. From the 4c we... Continue Reading →

Southern Sandstone

After a long winter converting my van I finally got around to using the bloody thing, and a weekend stop over in Southern sandstone was the first test, and well, it went well! Nice to use what I've spent so much time building! We first went to one of the minor outcrops, Happy Valley Rocks,... Continue Reading →

South Downs Mountain Biking

Today, I decided to have a rest from building the van, as yesterday I officially thrown my toys out of the pram! I have not written about the van conversion yet, and it is probably a good thing as quite often it pisses me off. So a day off was needed and we decided to... Continue Reading →

Climbing in Cornwall

So after a little jaunt en-route in Dewerstone we set out for the far west and Cornwall!! We booked our accommodation over the phone en route and a few hours later we arrived and set up camp. With fine weather we immediately inspected the guidebook and headed for Sennen. After finding the place we set... Continue Reading →

Valentine Tanks, Dorset

After a quick dive under the pier we jumped onto Swanage Divers boat and took a boat ride out past Old Harrys Rocks and over the Valentine Tanks. These 2 tanks have been on my wish list for a while and it felt good to finally be diving them, and I enjoyed them so much... Continue Reading →

Caving, Fairy Cave and Hilliers Cave

We have often climbed at Fairy Cave and seen all the cave entrances and wanted to have a trip down there. So finally we got our trip! Please excuse my lack of knowledge as for caving lingo etc… but only a few trips down, I’m not quite there with the correct knowledge, although hopefully a... Continue Reading →
